Handling A Dental Emergency

If you are suffering from toothache, have had an injury that requires immediate attention, or have a dental issue that can’t wait, please call us on 01 525 2670 to book an emergency appointment at one of our clinics.

At Dame Street Dental we truly are experts in handling dental emergencies – as a central, accessible clinic open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, our highly experienced clinical team have treated thousands of patients who have been caught off guard with dental pain or trauma and will effectively and rapidly resolve any issue you are experiencing.

Our Advice

We understand that toothache can be excruciating and will cater to this when you visit us.

We can advise you over the phone on the best ways to help you cope with the discomfort if you cannot see us immediately, and our dentists will do all they can to stop the pain during your appointment.

In Surgery Consultation

Your dentist will first prioritise reducing your pain, often through the application of local dental anaesthetic. Once you are comfortable, they will carry out a full examination of your problem tooth or area of concern, and advise you of the best course of treatment that can be carried out there and then. With your consent your dentist will then proceed with this emergency treatment right away – our goal is not only to resolve your immediate symptoms and get you out of pain, but far beyond that. At Dame Street Dental we don’t believe that a brief, prescription-focused emergency appointment to tide you over until a full appointment can be booked is good enough – when our dentists see patients for urgent care we prioritise treating and resolving as much of your underlying dental issue as possible during your emergency appointment, not later.

Next Steps

Following your urgent care and the beginning or resolution of your treatment, your dentist will assess your overall oral health situation, including any underlying issues which have caused or contributed to your dental emergency, and they will be able to give you a full treatment plan for any further treatment or procedures which you require to fully resolve the issue. Your emergency treatment also includes any prescription, for example for an antibiotic or pain relief, that is required as part of your treatment. Your dentist will be happy to answer any questions you may have at this stage and provide full explanations for future treatment that is recommended.

We understand that you may be concerned about the cost of your emergency treatment, which is why our dentists always include a full breakdown of total costs, and also an estimate of time until completion, of any additional dental work advised in your individual treatment plan. We believe in making quality, modern dental care accessible to all, and so we provide a number of different payment plan options so that you can choose to spread the cost of treatment out over time, and easily incorporate your dental healthcare into a plan that best suits your budget, needs and lifestyle.

The Final Step

Our front of house team will arrange any further appointments required to complete your treatment and restore your smile.

Commonly Asked Questions

At Dame Street Dental we know that emergency dental issues cannot wait, and one of our efficient and experienced dentists will see you as soon as possible. Call us on 01 525 2670 as soon as your dental problem causes you any pain, trouble or alarm and we will aim to see you on the same day.

Whether sudden or persistent, dental pain can be extremely debilitating. At Dame Street Dental we recommend calling us to make an emergency appointment as soon as toothache, damage or loosening of a tooth, or insistent jaw or facial pain becomes evident and troubling – we will aim to see you in clinic and resolve your problem as quickly as possible.

Some patients can find rinsing the mouth with warm, salty water to be soothing for radiating toothache, if easing the discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication is proving ineffective in the time before your emergency appointment.

In most cases, if you have experienced severe dental damage, fracture or trauma, the discomfort of tooth or gum pain, or facial swelling, our specially trained and experienced emergency dental team at Dame Street Dental will be able to resolve this issue for you during an urgent care appointment at our Dublin city centre clinic.

However, we recommend urgent attendance at your nearest A&E department if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Dental trauma from injury that is also accompanied by symptoms of severe head injury, such as bleeding from the nose or ears, or cuts or lacerations to your tongue, cheek or jaw
  • You or your loved one is experiencing blackouts, loss of consciousness, double vision or vomiting following an injury to the face
  • Facial swelling that obstructs or may obstruct the airway, or in any way makes breathing difficult

In the event of your tooth being knocked out or loosened by dental trauma, damage or injury, it is essential to reimplant the tooth as soon as possible.

Try your best to locate the tooth, and gently replace it into the socket, being careful to hold the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root. For an adult tooth that has been knocked out in this way, there is a chance for the tooth to be successfully replanted into the gum, if stored correctly and seen by a dental professional in good time. Bite down on a cotton pad, using pressure to keep the pad and tooth in position, and call us on 01 525 2670 right away to let us know what happened and be booked in for an emergency consultation that day.

If you don’t feel comfortable reinserting the tooth at home, please place it into a container of milk (not regular tap water or bottled water) before calling our clinic, and we will arrange to see you as soon as possible.

A dental crown or bridge becoming lost or loose can indeed be a dental emergency, however you will be relieved to hear, rarely an urgent one. If your crown has shifted or come off, it is best to have it replaced as soon as possible to avoid the risk of fracture of the remaining tooth structure. Call Dame Street Dental today on 01 525 2670 to make an appointment to replace your crown or bridge.

Yes, a dental abscess is a true dental emergency. An abscess is a localised infection, which looks like a painful, swollen pocket of pus on the gums or felt below the gumline

Which, if left untreated, has the potential to rapidly spread, causing difficulty with speech and breathing, and even in some cases spreading to other bodily systems via the circulatory system. Aside from the risk, even an early-stage dental abscess can often be extremely painful, and so we always strongly advise that you call us to book an emergency appointment on 01 525 2670 as soon as you notice any kind of dental abscess, to have the problem sorted out sooner rather than later.

At Dame Street Dental we understand the worry, inconvenience and alarm that comes with a dental emergency, whether you’ve had a sudden tooth breakage at the worst possible moment, or a loved one is suffering from an all-encompassing toothache and you don’t know where to turn.

For years, our city central, accessible clinic has been there for patients 7 days a week, 365 days a year and our clinical team have treated thousands of patients suffering from all kinds of dental emergencies. You can trust us to find the solution to your issue as quickly as possible, while putting you at ease in our relaxing and modern facilities. Our same day emergency appointments allow you to get out of pain today, while our expert and friendly staff have an eye on your ongoing and overall oral healthcare needs.

At Dame Street Dental an Emergency Consultation is charged at €50.

This includes the exam, any same day pain relief that is needed, and the issuing of any prescriptions you may need as part of your treatment. The additional cost of your total treatment will depend on the problem that you have presented with, and what treatment or procedures you will need to have carried out. Your dentist will always discuss this with you in full detail when advising you of your recommended treatment plan to fully resolve your dental issue.

You can also find further information regarding our general and specialist fees on our website, and our clinical and front of house teams will be happy to go through our various available payment plan options which we offer to suit all treatment needs, lifestyles and budgets. One of our available plans allows you to pay for your treatment monthly, with absolutely no down payment required and at 0% interest!

Thamires Fernandes
As luck would have it, I had a toothache while on a 2-week stay in Dublin so I booked an emergency appt here. I was a bit nervous and didn’t know what to expect, however, everyone from the reception to dental nurses were welcoming and kind, which made me feel a lot calmer. Dr. Abed might be the most pleasant dentist I’ve encountered and dr. Steed made the tooth extraction pain-free and with minimal post-extraction discomfort. I also liked that the price list is transparent. A small complaint: I was not sent the rtg of the tooth that was done during my first visit even though I paid for it. However, as I ended up coming back the second time to extract the tooth several days later, it was no longer relevant.

I went to Dame street Dental as an emergency patient. My tooth had broken and they were able to accommodate me by seeing me the next day morning, even though I wasn’t previously a patient. I went in and was extremely nervous and upset about my tooth. I was met with kindness, professionalism and compassion by Dr. Vanessa and Dental Nurse Fran. They were amazing to say the least. I will definitely be returning. Thank you.

In the last few months I have received superb, 5 star treatment from every single person I’ve dealt it, such as the receptionists and dental assistants. Dr Mo Abed, specially, is simply the most caring, professional and efficient dentist I have ever had the pleasure to deal with it. He always makes me feel so at ease and he always take time to explain the procedures and instructions to me. The quality of care and attention I’ve been provided is outstanding.
